01

Braided, coated construction

A tightly braided 100% polyglycolic acid filament coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate, engineered to improve surface smoothness and ease tissue passage.

02

Predictable hydrolytic absorption

Absorption proceeds by hydrolysis with progressive loss of tensile strength, essentially complete within approximately 60 to 90 days, requiring no removal from implanted tissue.

03

High tensile-strength retention

The braided structure supports high tensile-strength retention during the critical healing period, making it suitable for orthopaedic and hysterectomy soft-tissue procedures.

04

Secure, easy knotting

The coated surface supports good knot security and easy knot placement, giving surgeons reliable handling across a wide range of soft-tissue approximation techniques.

05

Undyed and violet options

Supplied in undyed and violet variants, with the dyed version coloured using CI Solvent Violet No. 13, allowing selection to suit visibility preferences and tissue site.

06

Pharmacopoeial compliance

Meets the requirements of the United States Pharmacopoeia and the European Pharmacopoeia for synthetic absorbable surgical sutures across its full range of gauges and lengths.

What PGA Suture Is

PGA Suture, marketed under the Petcryl brand, is a synthetic, sterile, absorbable, coated, braided surgical suture composed of 100% homopolymer of glycolide, popularly known as polyglycolic acid. Dolphin Sutures was the first Indian brand to launch this suture in India in the year 1997. The product complies with the requirements of the United States Pharmacopoeia (U.S.P.) and the European Pharmacopoeia (E.P.) for synthetic absorbable surgical sutures.

Composition and Construction

The suture material is a 100% homopolymer of glycolide. To improve handling and tissue passage, the braided filament is coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate, creating a smoother suture that passes through tissue easily. The violet variant is dyed with CI Solvent Violet No. 13, and an undyed version is also offered. Where needled, sutures are attached to stainless steel needles of varying types, sizes and shapes.

Characteristics and Handling

Petcryl is tightly braided to enhance strength and improve surface smoothness, and the coating supports good knot security and easy knot placement. Absorption proceeds by hydrolysis, accompanied by a progressive loss of tensile strength; the material is a single-use implantable device. Tissue reaction is graded slight (Grade-1), and absorption is essentially complete within approximately 60 to 90 days.

Presentations

PGA Suture is available in undyed and violet colour across a broad gauge range from 6-0 to 4, and in both non-needled and needled configurations. Reported applications include general closure, ophthalmic, orthopaedic, obstetrics and gynaecology, and gastro-intestinal tract surgery, across general soft-tissue approximation and ligation. The broad selection of sizes, lengths and needle profiles allows surgeons to match the suture to the patient’s condition, the surgical technique, and the size and nature of the wound.

PGA suture is intended for general soft tissue approximation and ligation, including ophthalmic use. It is not intended for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues; always follow the approved indication and Instructions for Use.

Contact Sales
What is PGA Suture made of?
PGA Suture is a synthetic, braided surgical suture composed of 100% homopolymer of glycolide, commonly known as polyglycolic acid. It is coated with polycaprolactone and calcium stearate to improve handling and tissue passage, and complies with U.S.P. and E.P. requirements for synthetic absorbable sutures.
What is PGA Suture used for?
Polyglycolic Acid suture is intended for approximation of soft tissues where an absorbable, braided synthetic suture is appropriate. It is indicated for general soft tissue approximation, including ophthalmic use, but is not intended for cardiovascular or neurological tissues.
How is PGA Suture absorbed?
Absorption begins with loss of tensile strength and proceeds by hydrolysis. Based on the supplied product information, absorption is essentially complete within approximately 60 to 90 days, after which the material does not require removal from implanted tissue.
What sizes and needle configurations are available?
PGA Suture is offered across gauge sizes from 6-0 to 4, in undyed and violet colours. It is supplied either non-needled or attached to stainless steel needles of varying types, lengths and profiles, such as round body, reverse cutting and spatulated points, to suit different procedures.
Is PGA Suture supplied sterile?
Yes. PETCRYL sutures are sterilized by ethylene oxide and supplied sterile for single use. Do not resterilize, and do not use if the package is open or damaged. Opened, unused sutures should be discarded in line with accepted practice.
How should PGA Suture be stored?
Store at 10 degrees C to 35 degrees C, protected from moisture and direct heat. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging. Refer to the approved product label or carton for the claimed shelf life.
When should PGA Suture not be used?
Being absorbable, it should not be used where prolonged approximation of tissues under stress is required. It is also unsuitable in patients with known localized inflammation, itching or hypersensitivity at the intended implantation site where, in the clinician's judgment, its use would be inappropriate.
How can distributors obtain documentation and product details?
Dolphin Sutures supplies PGA Suture in a range of gauges, lengths and needle configurations with supporting Instructions for Use and regulatory documentation. Distributors and procurement teams can contact Dolphin Sutures / Futura Medtech directly to request specifications, product codes and compliance documentation.
