Surgical site infections (SSI) are infections that occurs after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place, i.e. a wound created by an invasive surgical procedure. An SSI typically occurs within 30 days after surgery and may cause redness, delayed healing, fever, pain, tenderness, warmth, or swelling. SSI are associated with severe morbidity and mortality, especially in high-risk patient populations
Infections after surgery are caused by pathogenic organisms. The most common of these include the bacteria Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Pseudomonas. Germs can infect a surgical wound through various forms of contact, such as from the touch of a contaminated caregiver or surgical instrument, through germs in the air, or through germs that are already on or in your body and then spread into the wound. In addition, the presence of suture material in wounds increases the susceptibility of the tissue to infection. To prevent microbial colonization of suture materials, our Antibacterials range of sutures were developed.
The Antibacterials range introduced by Dolphin Sutures contain Triclosan coating that is a known broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent and is very effective at killing microorganisms. Triclosan as a broad spectrum antiseptic is known from in vitro and in vivo studies to reduce the adherence of selective clinical Gram-positive, Gram-negative, drug-resistant, and biofilm-forming strains to the surface of surgical suture.
