Polydioxanone Barbed Sutures

Durabarb Polydioxanone Barbed Sutures are sterile, synthetic absorbable monofilament devices for knotless wound closure, using surface barbs to distribute tension evenly and support continuous tissue approximation during general surgery.

01

Knotless continuous closure

Surface barbs anchor the suture within tissue, enabling continuous running closure without terminal knots and allowing subcutaneous and dermal layers to be approximated together.

02

Absorbable polydioxanone monofilament

A sterile, synthetic absorbable monofilament composed of poly (p-dioxanone), non-antigenic and non-pyrogenic, that is gradually absorbed by hydrolysis, reducing the need for suture removal.

03

Barb geometry

Barbs are positioned at approximately a 72 degree angle in a spiral arrangement or in a symmetric manner, distributing tension evenly along the suture line to combine holding security with closure speed.

04

Unidirectional and bidirectional options

Available in unidirectional configurations with a terminal loop or a fixation tab and double-armed bidirectional configurations where barbs reverse direction at the suture mid-point.

05

Violet for clear visibility

Dyed with D&C Violet No. 2 (Colour Index Number 60725) during polymerization to enhance visibility of the suture against tissue during placement and closure.

06

Minimal tissue reaction

Polydioxanone elicits only a minimal tissue reaction during absorption and is classified Grade-1, slight reactivity, while the knotless design minimises strangulation of tissue.

What Durabarb Barbed Sutures Are

Durabarb is Dolphin Sutures’ range of Polydioxanone Barbed Sutures, a specialty-suture solution designed for knotless wound closure. Each suture is a sterile, synthetic absorbable monofilament composed of poly (p-dioxanone), with the empirical polymer formula (C4H6O3)n. The material has been found to be non-antigenic and non-pyrogenic, eliciting only a minimal tissue reaction during absorption, which proceeds by hydrolysis.

Composition and Construction

The suture body is polydioxanone (approximately 99.5% w/w) with dye content of approximately 0.5% w/w. To enhance visibility, the suture is dyed violet using D&C Violet No. 2 (Colour Index Number 60725) during polymerization. Barbs are positioned on the suture surface at approximately a 72 degree angle and arranged in a spiral manner or symmetric manner. They may be configured unidirectionally or bidirectionally; unidirectional barbed sutures feature a terminal loop or with a fixation tab, while bidirectional variants are double-armed with barbs reversing direction at the mid-point.

Characteristics and Handling

The barbed design distributes tension evenly along the suture line, combining security with speed. Because there are no knots to tie or dissolve, multiple layers such as subcutaneous and dermis can be closed together with one continuous running suture, reducing the potential for suture spitting and minimising tissue strangulation. The suture is absorbable and gradually loses tensile strength, reducing the need for removal. Barbs should be handled with care to avoid bending, twisting, or pulling that may damage the barb structure.

Contact Sales
What are Durabarb Polydioxanone Barbed Sutures used for?
Monofilament Polydioxanone suture is intended for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation. The barbed, knotless design supports continuous wound closure during surgical procedures and is intended for use by qualified medical practitioners or doctors.
What material are they made from?
They are a sterile, synthetic absorbable monofilament composed of poly (p-dioxanone), approximately 99.5% w/w polydioxanone with approximately 0.5% w/w dye. Needles, where supplied, are AISI 302 or AISI 420 stainless steel. The suture is uncoated and violet in colour.
How does the knotless barbed design work?
Barbs are positioned on the suture surface at approximately a 72 degree angle in a spiral arrangement, anchoring the suture within tissue so closure can proceed without terminal knots. Configurations are unidirectional with a terminal loop, or double-armed bidirectional with barbs reversing at the mid-point.
What sizes and configurations are available?
Durabarb is available in sizes 3-0, 2-0, 0 and 1, supplied non-needled or pre-attached to stainless steel needles of various types, sizes and shapes. Barbed variants include unidirectional-with-loop and bidirectional configurations across a range of suture and needle lengths.
How is the suture absorbed?
Absorption occurs by hydrolysis, with the suture gradually losing tensile strength over time. Implantation studies in rabbits indicate polydioxanone suture is typically absorbed between 180 to 190 days post-implantation, reducing the need for suture removal.
Are Durabarb sutures supplied sterile?
Yes. They are supplied sterile, sterilized by ethylene oxide, and are intended for single use only. Do not re-sterilize and do not use if the package is opened or damaged. Use the suture as soon as it is removed from the packaging.
How should the product be stored?
Store between 10 degrees C and 35 degrees C, away from moisture and direct sunlight or heat. Do not use after the expiry date. The product has a shelf life of 5 years from the date of manufacture when stored as directed.
How can distributors obtain documentation and ordering details?
Dolphin Sutures supplies Durabarb with product codes, needle profiles, suture lengths and configuration details for each variant. Distributors and procurement teams can contact Futura Surgicare / Futura Medtech for the Instructions for Use, regulatory documentation and full ordering specifications.
