What Petcryl Plus Is

Petcryl Plus is a sterile synthetic absorbable suture built on Polyglactin 910. It is constructed as a coated, braided multifilament and is intended for soft-tissue approximation and ligation where a temporary, absorbable suture is appropriate. Because it is fully synthetic, Petcryl Plus is commonly used as an alternative to catgut across a broad range of procedures.

Composition and Construction

The suture body is a copolymer of glycolide and L-lactide, formulated from 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide. The filament is coated with an equal-parts copolymer of lactide and glycolide together with calcium stearate, giving a smoother surface for tissue passage. In addition, Petcryl Plus carries a Triclosan coating, which is intended to inhibit bacterial colonization of the suture itself.

Absorption

Absorption proceeds by hydrolysis, the gradual breakdown of the copolymer over time. Tissue reaction is characterised in the specification as slight (Grade-1).

Characteristics and Handling

The copolymer coating is designed to help the suture pass smoothly through tissue, while the braided construction supports knot placement and knot security. Petcryl Plus is offered both undyed and dyed violet, so surgeons can select the visibility that best suits the operative field. Needles are made from 300-series alloy steel.

Applications and Presentations

Petcryl Plus is used in general closure, obstetrics and gynaecology, and gastro-intestinal tract surgery. It is available in U.S.P. sizes from 5-0 through 2, in a range of needled configurations to match different tissue and access requirements. Individual presentations combine specific needle profiles, needle lengths and suture lengths, with each variant identified by its own code number to support accurate selection and ordering. Together, the synthetic absorbable composition, coated braided construction and Triclosan coating make Petcryl Plus a versatile choice across the settings in which it is indicated.
