Sutures and Devices for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery
What working through a port asks of a suture, a mesh and a fixation device, and what Dolphin Sutures manufactures for the field.
What this field asks of a material
Minimally invasive surgery changes the mechanics of closure before it changes anything else. Instruments reach the tissue through a fixed port, so the arc a needle can sweep is constrained, knots are tied at a distance or not at all, and an implant has to pass through a cannula before it can be positioned. Devices intended for this field are shaped by those three constraints rather than by the tissue being different.
What clinicians weigh
- Whether the closure can be tied at all, and what a knotless barbed strand changes if it cannot
- How an implant is delivered and deployed through a port, which is a property of the product rather than of the repair
- Fixation, which is a decision separate from the mesh itself — see the knowledge base on mesh fixation
