What Polyglactin Rapid Sutures Are

Petcryl 910 Fast is a sterile, synthetic, absorbable surgical suture from Dolphin Sutures, the first Indian brand to introduce Polyglactin sutures in India. It belongs to the Polyglactin 910 family but is formulated for rapid absorption, making it well suited to cases where short-term tissue approximation is required. The device is intended for soft tissue approximation and/or ligation where only short-term wound support is needed.

Composition and Construction

The suture is a braided, coated copolymer of 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide. It is coated with poly(glycolide-co-lactide) and calcium stearate to improve handling and help the strand pass smoothly through tissue. The suture is supplied undyed, aiding visibility during placement, and complies with the requirements of the United States Pharmacopoeia (U.S.P.) and the European Pharmacopoeia (E.P.) for absorbable surgical sutures.

Characteristics and Handling

Petcryl 910 Fast absorbs by simple hydrolytic mechanism, with absorption that is predictable and progressive: tensile strength is lost first, followed by gradual loss of mass. It elicits minimal (Grade-1, slight) tissue reaction and promotes ingrowth of fibrous connective tissue. The coated, braided design supports good knot security and easy knot placement. Needled variants use stainless steel needles of varying types and shapes.

The suture is offered across a broad U.S.P. gauge range from 6-0 to 4, in a variety of suture lengths, either non-needled or armed with stainless steel needles in profiles such as cutting, reverse cutting, and taper cutting configurations. This breadth of catalogue codes lets surgeons match strand size, needle geometry, and length to the procedure at hand. Because the device is absorbable and gradually loses tensile strength during healing before absorption, it removes the need to return for suture removal in suitable short-term applications.
