Sutures for Orthopaedic and Arthroscopic Surgery
What tendon, ligament and heavy soft-tissue repair asks of a suture material, and the range Dolphin Sutures manufactures.
What this field asks of a material
Orthopaedic soft-tissue work loads a suture differently from visceral closure. Tendon and ligament repair puts sustained tension through the strand rather than holding two edges in apposition, and the tissue itself is dense and fibrous, so the strand has to pass through it as well as hold it. That combination is why the discipline reaches for high-tensile non-absorbable materials more often than general closure does, and why gauge is discussed alongside material rather than after it.
What clinicians weigh
- Whether support is needed permanently or only while healing, which is a judgement about the repair
- How the strand passes through dense fibrous tissue, a handling property of the construction
- Gauge against the tensile requirement the pharmacopoeia sets for that size
