What Hemostax ORC Is
Hemostax® Absorbable Hemostat ORC is a sterile absorbable knitted fabric prepared by the controlled oxidation of regenerated cellulose. Launched under Dolphin Hemostats, it is intended for use in the control of bleeding sites and is indicated for use by a qualified medical practitioner to control bleeding from operative sites during surgery. The fabric is white with a pale yellow cast and carries a faint caramel-like aroma.
Composition and Construction
The device is composed of oxidized regenerated cellulose in a sterile, absorbable knitted fabric form. Its woven construction lets the surgeon grasp with forceps the amount of material required to achieve hemostasis at a particular bleeding site. Upon contact with blood, the material swells into a brownish or black gelatinous mass that assists clot formation and acts as a local hemostatic adjunct.
Handling and Performance
After becoming saturated with blood, the fabric forms a gelatinous mass that aids clot formation, serving as an adjunct in the control of local hemorrhage. When used properly in minimal amounts, the product is absorbed from the implantation site with practically no tissue reaction, and it has an in vivo lifetime of approximately 7 to 14 days.
Correct Use
Use only as much material as is necessary for hemostasis and hold it firmly in place until bleeding stops. Open the package just prior to use, apply aseptic technique, and avoid excessive packing at the surgical site. Where appropriate, remove excess from open wounds by forceps or irrigation with sterile water or saline after bleeding has stopped.
Presentation
The product is supplied sterile for single use and is sterilized by gamma radiation. It should be stored at 10°C to 35°C, away from moisture and direct heat, and not used after the expiry date.
