What absorbable sutures are
An absorbable suture provides wound support while tissue heals and is then broken down and absorbed by the body, so it does not need to be removed. Synthetic absorbable sutures are absorbed mainly by hydrolysis, while natural absorbable sutures such as catgut are broken down by enzymatic action.
They are available as braided (multifilament) sutures, which offer supple handling and knot security, and as monofilament sutures, which pass smoothly through tissue.
Choosing an absorption profile
Absorbable sutures differ in how long they retain tensile strength and how long they take to absorb — described here as rapid, standard or extended. The right profile depends on the tissue and how long it needs support: faster-absorbing sutures suit tissues that heal quickly, while extended profiles suit tissue that needs longer support.
Range and sizes
The range spans U.S.P. sizes for a wide variety of procedures, in both braided and monofilament constructions and with a choice of needle configurations. Selection of material, size and needle rests with the operating surgeon based on the tissue and procedure.
The Absorbable Sutures range
Synthetic and natural absorbable sutures — polyglactin, PGA, poliglecaprone, polydioxanone and catgut — that lose tensile strength predictably and are absorbed by the body, so no removal is needed.
How long each material holds
Tensile strength is lost well before the suture is absorbed, so the two are quoted separately. The curve is the first; the absorption column is the second.
