What this field asks of a material
Cardiovascular closure is distinguished by what the suture line has to hold against. A vascular anastomosis carries pulsatile pressure continuously from the moment flow is restored, so the material is expected to retain strength indefinitely rather than for a healing period, and the suture line is expected to be haemostatic as constructed. That combination is why the discipline uses non-absorbable materials almost exclusively, and why monofilament construction and fine gauges dominate — a smooth strand passing through vessel wall behaves differently from a braided one.
