01

Dual-sided composite construction

Composed of one layer of polymer matrix for the parietal side and one layer of medical-grade silicone for the visceral side, fused into a single composite mesh with two functionally distinct surfaces.

02

Silicone barrier on the visceral side

The non-adherent silicone layer is intended to act as a barrier on the visceral side and to minimise tissue attachment to the prosthesis.

03

Polymer matrix on the parietal side

The polymer matrix surface is intended to encourage tissue ingrowth and fixation on the parietal side of the mesh.

04

Micropores for seroma drainage

The mesh contains drainage holes that are intended to allow drainage of seroma.

05

Translucent and low profile

The translucent silicone barrier allows visualisation of the underlying tissues, and the low-profile design is intended to support laparoscopic deployment.

06

Non-absorbable sterile prosthesis

A non-absorbable, sterile prosthesis supplied for single use in a range of shapes and sizes for open and laparoscopic hernia repair.

What Silene Mesh Is

Silene is a sterile, non-absorbable composite mesh designed for intraperitoneal hernia repair. The dual-sided prosthesis fuses two functionally distinct surfaces into a single composite: a polymer matrix intended to support tissue integration on one side and a medical-grade silicone layer intended to act as a barrier on the visceral side. It is used for the reconstruction of soft-tissue deficiencies and is intended for use by a qualified surgeon trained in mesh implantation and the relevant surgical techniques.

Composition and Construction

Silene is composed of one layer of polymer matrix for the parietal side and one layer of medical-grade silicone for the visceral side. The polymer matrix is formed of thermally interlaced polymer fibres, and the two functional layers are fused into a single composite mesh. The polymer surface is intended to encourage tissue ingrowth and colonisation on the parietal side, while the non-adherent silicone film is intended to act as a barrier and to minimise tissue attachment on the visceral side. The mesh also contains drainage holes intended to allow seroma drainage.

Characteristics and Handling

The translucent silicone barrier allows visualisation of the underlying tissues and vessels, and the low-profile design is intended to support laparoscopic deployment. The mesh can be trimmed and shaped to suit the repair. Proper orientation is essential: the silicone surface is placed against the bowel or other visceral structures, and the polymer matrix surface faces the tissue plane where ingrowth is intended. Silene is compatible with usual fixation devices, including sutures, helicoidal fixation and tacking devices. Selection of size, orientation and fixation method is at the discretion of the surgeon, based on the patient’s condition, the type and location of the defect, and operative requirements.

Applications

Silene is designed for use in:

  • Laparoscopic / minimally invasive ventral hernia repair
  • Incisional hernia repair
  • Umbilical hernia (for visceral contact)

Contact Sales
What is Silene mesh made of?
Silene is a dual-sided composite mesh composed of one layer of polymer matrix on the parietal side and one layer of medical-grade silicone on the visceral side, fused into a single composite.
What is Silene intended for?
Silene is a non-absorbable prosthesis designed for the reconstruction of soft-tissue deficiencies, including the repair of hernias and chest-wall defects, in open and laparoscopic approaches where visceral contact is expected.
How is the mesh fixed?
Silene is compatible with usual fixation devices, including sutures, helicoidal fixation and tacking devices, at the discretion of the operating surgeon based on the procedure and surgical technique.
Which way does Silene face?
Proper orientation is essential. The silicone surface is placed against the bowel or other visceral structures, and the polymer matrix surface faces the tissue plane where tissue ingrowth is intended.
Is Silene absorbable?
No. Silene is a non-absorbable prosthesis intended to remain implanted as a permanent device unless removal is clinically indicated by the treating surgeon.
What sizes are available?
Silene is available in rectangular sizes from 6 x 11 cm to 30 x 30 cm and circular sizes of 10 cm, 12 cm and 15 cm. Refer to the ordering table for codes and dimensions.
